Welcome to Audre’s Den

Read, write, rest, repeat.

Our Story

Rooted in Reverence

Audre’s Den is a non-profit organization with a mission to bridge literacy and wellness, using our bookstore as the central hub for this work.

Inspired by the legacy of Audre Lorde, we believe that access to literature and commitment to well-being are interconnected practices essential for individual and community survival. Our bookstore serves as a gathering place and a launchpad for resources, programs, and community care.

Our work is grounded in a defining truth:

"Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare."

At Audre’s Den, we turn this truth into action. Through our bookstore hub, we provide the books, wellness resources, and physical space necessary for community members to gather, reflect, and thrive. Tending to our minds and bodies is both a daily practice and a collective responsibility.

The Vision in Motion

Audre’s Den is a community space and bookstore where people of all ages can come to read, write, connect, imagine, and rest their minds. We are a welcoming gathering place that counters a fast-paced culture of constant productivity.

Our goal is to center local and underrepresented voices, especially Black women and women writers, while supporting people in taking care of their whole selves.

Our bookstore hub provides a dedicated space to:

  • Read slowly: Take your time with books that matter.

  • Write freely: Practice self-expression and build literacy skills.

  • Rest without explanation: Take a break without feeling like you need to earn it.

  • Connect together: Gather as a community to build towards collective liberation.

We believe that books are powerful, imagination is essential, and taking care of one another is a necessary part of community life.

Where We Are & Where We’re Going

After a powerful launch and beginning of connecting with our community, Audre’s Den is officially in motion. We are currently operating as a mobile bookstore and pop-up experience, traveling throughout the community to bring the sanctuary to you.

While our wheels are turning now, our roots are searching for a permanent home. We are deep in the process of preparing our brick-and-mortar sanctuary, with plans to open the doors to our physical location later this summer/fall.

Audre’s Den is an offering. We invite you to join us in this space—to read, write, rest, and help us build a stronger, healthier community together.

Write

The Page as a Site of Truth

Writing is how we bear witness to our own lives. At Audre’s Den, we believe that having the tools and the space to tell your story is a fundamental right, not a luxury.

Your contributions bring the "Write" mission to life by funding:

  • Sanctuary Spaces: Providing dedicated areas where community members can sit, reflect, and write on-site—free of charge and without distraction.

  • Workshops & Readings: Supporting community-led programming that offers guidance for the seasoned writer and the curious beginner alike.

  • Creative Resources: Keeping our "Writing Bar" stocked with pens, paper, and creative supplies for anyone who feels a spark of inspiration while visiting.

  • A Platform for Voices: Creating opportunities for emerging and local writers to share their work through curated readings and open-mic sessions.

By supporting this work, you are helping us build a living archive of our truths. You are ensuring that the next generation of storytellers has a place to be heard, held, and honored.

Read

Books as Mirrors and Maps

At Audre’s Den, the books we carry are more than inventory—they are invitations to be seen. Your support directly stocks our shelves with narratives that reflect the fullness, complexity, and brilliance of our lives.

When you support our collection, you help us:

  • Maintain a Curated Sanctuary: We prioritize Black, women, and queer voices, ensuring that our collection serves as both a mirror for the community and a map for the soul.

  • Keep the Space Open: Your contributions allow us to remain a "reading room" where people can sit and engage with literature on-site without the pressure to purchase.

  • Foster Radical Accessibility: We believe that transformative words should be available to everyone. Your donations power our Community Book Programs, providing free books to youth and adults and allowing us to offer accessible sliding-scale pricing.

Every book found here is an act of resistance against erasure. Thank you for helping us keep these stories in circulation.

How You Can Contribute

  • Purchase a Title: Every sale keeps our mobile (and soon-to-be permanent) doors open.

  • The "Pay It Forward" Fund: Donate specifically to our community book programs.

  • Book Sponsorship: Help us gift specific titles to local youth organizations.

Rest

The Radical Act of Being

In a culture that equates our worth with our productivity, rest is an act of reclamation. At Audre’s Den, we don’t just sell books; we offer a sanctuary for the spirit. Your support ensures that our doors remain open to those who simply need a place to breathe.

Your generosity sustains the "Rest" mission by:

  • Protecting the Quiet: Maintaining a calm, inviting environment designed specifically for slowing down and self-reflection.

  • Removing the Pressure: Ensuring that anyone can enter, sit, and linger in our space without the requirement or pressure to make a purchase.

  • Nurturing the Environment: Providing the physical comforts—from seating to atmosphere—that make deep, restorative stillness possible.

  • Valuing Human Presence: Honoring the idea that "being" is just as important as "doing."

By giving to this mission, you are helping us provide a rare gift: a place where the community is invited to exhale, to soften, and to remember that they are enough exactly as they are.
